LAKE ERIE SHORELINE, WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT.
Effective immediately, the Catfish Creek Conservation Authority (CCCA) is issuing a Watershed Condition Statement for the shoreline of Lake Erie within CCCA’s administrative boundary.
Environment Canada, Great Lakes Marine Forecast, issues weather advisories identifying and outlining present weather conditions, concerns and future weather forecasts for the Great Lakes, which includes Lake Erie. The harshest weather on Lake Erie for winds and consequent waves affecting the north shore is during the winter months especially if the lake is free of ice.
Catfish Creek Conservation Authority is charged with reviewing, condensing and issuing Lake Erie Shoreline, Watershed Condition Statements outlining such advisories and possible effects on the Lake Erie shoreline. As this is, the season (winter) when most storms occur CCCA is issuing an extended Watershed Condition Statement to remain in effect until such time as the CCCA identifies the need to discontinue this Watershed Condition Statement.
Generally, this Watershed Condition Statement identifies that there are possibilities of winter storms generating extreme winds and consequent large waves, which will make the Lake Erie shoreline and area unsafe for any activities. Power outages are possible. Damage to buildings, such as roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. There is a possibility of a wave uprush along the Lake Erie water frontage from Waneeta Beach, to the harbour area which has the potential to cause shoreline erosion.
Residents are asked to closely watch local conditions and take appropriate responsible action, and are urged to use caution and stay away from Lake Erie shoreline areas experiencing strong wave action and elevated water levels.
Municipal flood coordinators are asked to monitor road conditions along the lakeshore.
This Watershed Condition Statement is in effect until May 1, 2025 at which time it will be reviewed and adjusted accordingly.
This is a reminder to be diligent, and watch local weather conditions and to take appropriate action when circumstances require.
CCCA continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue updates and recommendations when or if necessary. CCCA always recommends taking all necessary precautions.
