Environmental Education – Available Programs

Welcome to the Environmental Education Program

Learning is in Our Nature!

Explore The Aquatic World Program

What lies beneath the mysteries of ponds and streams? Students will catch and identify aquatic life, learn about the animal kingdom, and the importance of diversity and water conservation. This activity is sure to have a lasting and powerful impact on student’s perception of animals, plants, and the importance of keeping our watershed clean.

The Forest Through the Trees

The Carolinian Life Zone provides a unique opportunity to view various types of forest ecosystems. Students will become “tree detectives” as they learn the basics of tree identification, what depends on them for survival, characteristics of the four forest seasons, forest fire ecology, and the importance of conservation. Students will also learn how to use a compass in orienteering.

Adventure Hike

Enter nature’s fascinating world with a hike into an old-growth Carolinian forest. The Springwater Forest, Archie Coulter Forest, and Yarmouth Natural Heritage Area all provide a diversity of habitat that supports many species of plants and animals, from the common to the rare. Students will learn more about the behaviors and habits of wildlife as they experience the sights, sounds, and smells along the trail. A fun predator/prey activity can be incorporated into this program. A great way to wrap up the school year!

The Earth Beneath My Feet

Students will be lad through an interactive set of activities that investigate the different types of soils and how they are formed. This hands-on exploration will have students observing the different horizons of soils in the forest and will cover the relationship between soils and other living things (including humans!). Prepare to get your hands dirty as it’s time to discover the world beneath our feet.

Maple Syrup Education Program

Everybody loves maple syrup! Come and discover how maple syrup is collected and produced in a modern-day and historical context by taking a tour through Springwater’s Sugar Shanty. Students will have an opportunity to learn how to tap a tree and why trees produce these delicious sugars. The students will also have an opportunity to purchase maple products with a form sent to teachers before the trip. Thames Valley District School Board schools should contact the Jaffa Environmental Education Centre for bookings. Other groups, please contact the CCCA Admin Centre.

*NEW* Watershed Program

The CCCA Educators have created a new Watershed Education Program. The program focuses on the health of our watershed, the Catfish Creek, the roles and responsibilities of a Conservation Authority, and the role humans have in keeping our watershed healthy.

*NEW* In-School Programs

The CCCA Educators are dedicated to building relationships between youth and their natural world. These programs are typically offered at your school from November-April and can be specialized to meet curriculum needs. Activities can include multimedia presentations, games, nature explorations or investigation of natural specimens.

Youth & Community Programs

You do not need to be a public school group to come and appreciate a knowledge-building day! Contact us today to learn more about bringing your group.
