Effective immediately, the Catfish Creek Conservation Authority (CCCA) is issuing a Water Safety, Watershed Conditions Statement for areas adjacent to watercourses within the Catfish Creek watershed and its tributaries. The forecast precipitation has the potential to increase channel water flows within the CCCA administrative area.
This is a Water Safety, Watershed Conditions Statement indicating a likelihood of elevated creek flows, coupled with a probability of unsafe bank conditions, and/or other unforseen factors, which could be dangerous for ANY activities around creeks, rivers or any open waterways that involves children, pets and/or adults.
Under the Conservation Authorities Act, Conservation Authorities (CAs) are required to provide programs and services related to the risk of natural hazards that are prescribed in regulation (O. Reg. 686/21 ‘Mandatory Programs and Services’). This include but is not limited to,
- Monitoring weather forecast information, observed water levels and flows within their jurisdiction.
- Provide analysis of current and forecasted local river conditions within their jurisdiction.
- Issue messages to the municipalities and media within their jurisdiction as per aforementioned analysis.
The public is encouraged to exercise extreme caution near all bodies of water, and to keep children and pets away from waterways. Landowners are advised to check dams, culverts, and catch basins and make sure they are free from debris and functioning as intended during high water conditions.
CCCA will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will issue updates and recommendations as necessary.
At present this Water Safety, Watershed Conditions Statement will remain in effect until 8:00 a.m. Monday April 14th . Residents are asked to closely watch local conditions and take appropriate responsible action. Updates will be made available when and if conditions warrant.
